CHAPTER SIX

‘YES,’ the doctor said a few minutes later. ‘You were right to call me, Luc. Nothing particularly serious, but she will have to stay quiet for a day or so.’

‘A day or so?’ yelped Lora. ‘I can’t stay here that long!’

Luc turned to the doctor. ‘I think she means she can’t stay still for that long,’ he said smoothly.

The man’s face cleared. ‘Oh. I was beginning to think my English—what little I have of it—was disappearing completely.’ He turned to Lora and beamed. ‘Nothing much to worry about,’ he said. ‘But take it easy. You’re in good hands here.’ He winked theatrically and added, ‘It is a long time since Luc brought a girlfriend home. You must be very special. Make sure he looks after you.’

Lora could not meet Luc’s eyes as he grasped her hand and said, ‘Oh, I will, you can be sure of that.’ The nerve of the man. The utter bloody nerve.

She thought of how she had lain in his arms only a few minutes ago, and could feel the colour slowly seep up her neck and face. The more the doctor and Luc gazed at her, the redder and redder she grew, until she felt her cheeks grow almost beetroot with embarrassment.

The doctor was smiling at her, a friendly knowing smile, and she knew exactly what was going through his mind. That she and Luc were lovers. Luc’s affectionate tone, her burning embarrassment were only serving to confirm the assumption. It would be impossible to tell this man the truth. He would merely think that her knock on the head was more serious than he had at first diagnosed.

At last Luc ushered the doctor out. When he returned, he leant against the door and stared at her speculatively. ‘Tell me something, Lora.’

She wrapped her arms around her knees as if to protect herself from his gaze and then enquired as coolly as she could, ‘Name, rank or serial number?’

He gestured impatiently as if clearing away her remark. ‘Why didn’t you tell the doctor your story?’

She shrugged and then answered bitterly, ‘You mean the silly one about how you kidnapped me and are now keeping me prisoner against my will?’

Only the narrowing of his eyes showed that her barb had gone home. ‘That’s the one,’ he nodded calmly. ‘Yes.’

She sighed. ‘What would be the point? You were quite right, weren’t you? If I had turned round to him and said, Thanks so much for looking at my head. Oh, and by the way, this man Luc de la Falaise, whom you seem to have known for years, and who appears to be extremely kind to me, is really keeping me here against my will. How about helping me to escape? you can guess what he would have done.’

Luc smiled a little and answered, ‘He would have tut-tutted sympathetically and given me a bottle of pills for your nerves. Of course,’ he added, ‘considering the way you have been behaving lately, the person who is most in need of nerve pills at the moment is me.
